If you are travelling by train on the West Coast main line there are three stations in Cumbria. Oxenholme, for Windermere and the South Lakes, Penrith for Keswick, Ullswater and the Western Lakes and Carlisle for the north of Cumbria and Hadrian's Wall. From Newcastle and the North East you can take the train to Carlisle with Northern Rail.

From Carlisle connections to the West Coast main line, Cumbria Coast line to Barrow-in-Furness with Northern Rail or the Settle to Carlisle line are available.

Trains from Yorkshire, Greater Manchester and Northern Wales call at Oxenholme.  For trains to Grange-over-Sands and Barrow-in-Furness the West Coast main line northbound change at Lancaster to the Furness line.
