Be prepared, steps you can take

Plan ahead, make sure someone knows the route you are going

• Check the weather forecast
• Take appropriate equipment and clothing, spare layers, it's always colder on the tops
• Take plenty high energy foods
• First aid kit, map and compass, it is also wise to carry a whistle and mobile phone
• For water activities wear a buoyancy aid and use correct equipment
• Be aware of your distance from the shore, the water can be dangerously deep and cold

Talk to the experts if you are in any doubt about your fitness and if you do get into difficulties, don't feel you have to press on - the most respected adventurers have always known when to turn back.
